The Big Local is a National Lottery funded programme that has given 150 areas in England £1m to spend over 10 years to make their areas better places to live.
Run by the Local Trust, the programme is based on the principle of Community Lead Local Development (CLLD) which enables local residents to make decisions on how the money should be spent.
Each area has a rep to support its decision making and liaise with the Local Trust. As their plans develop they become a critical friend to ensure best practice and to have an independent voice in the community.
Regular training is available to Partnerships and residents to help develop skills to help the path towards achieving the Big Local outcomes;
- Communities are able to identify local needs and take action in response to them
- Residents with have increased skills and confidence so that they can continue to identify and respond to the need in the future
- The community will make a difference to the needs it prioritises
- People will feel that their area is an even better place to live
